Evaluation of Pan's Labyrinth

Hello Dr. Wood’s class readers,

The movie Pan’s Labyrinth directed by the fabulous Del Toro captured millions of people all over the world. Del Toro gave all of us an image that we have never witnessed before, breaking thousand and thousands of rules. Making this film, Del Toro stepped out of the common standard movies in this world and made it exotic and addictive for many.
Del Toro did not just stop when the movie got too gruesome, but continued and made it very hard to take your eyes off the television even though you’re cringing at the sight of the violence. In the part where the captain hit one man’s nose repeatedly with a bottle of wine, I wanted to take my eyes off that scene so bad. But, it was too captivating for me to take my eyes off the television.

Don’t believe me that the movie was complete out of the box? I’m not worried because I have every proof that it was. Pan’s Labyrinth got so much attention that it had to be nominated for an Academy Award. It is one of the biggest recognition you can get in the film world. Pan’s Labyrinth won Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Art Direction and Best Achievement in Makeup. I do not need to say more. It was also nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, Original Screenplay, Art Direction, and Original Score. It was nominated for seven statues and it walked away with three statues. It is even already a big honor to be even nominated, and for Pan’s Labyrinth to walk away with three statues is a big BIG honor.

“I knew that it was almost impossible for Pan's Labyrinth not to walk away without at least one statue but to come away as the second biggest winner of the night is pretty big…. It is not very
often that we get the spotlight shone on films in our genre [horror]. But a man as talented a Guillermo del Toro was bound to have a film that won some awards.”

Critics was not surprised to see that Pan’s Labyrinth has achieved a lot of things, because the director did not stop at original idea of most movies, but stepped outside of box bringing something NO one has seen before. I mean winning an academy award says a lot of things. A must see movie.

Purdue OWL website

Hello readers, hope you all had a great weekend. I sure did J

Have you all gone on the Internet to look for some websites that could help your argument look and has much more stronger points? I never once did that. I did not realize that there were websites out there that guided us through the arguments we are trying to present. It was really cool watching Dr. Wood giving us that PowerPoint presentation in the class last Friday.

The OWL website basically guides us through our writing. Let’s admit it, people- we often do get stuck on our paper and spend hours sitting there by the computer thinking what’s the best way you could write your paper. When that happens, just go to http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl. You are able to get everything you need to write your paper in this website.

You need to write your thesis statement? You need to develop an outline? You need to figure out what to say in your introduction? You need to know how to do APA citation? The questions just do not stop there. Any questions can be answered in that website. The impressive thing about this website is its organization because there are so many things on this website and yet it looks really clean. It has tabs in general words like “Research and Citation” and when you click on it, it opens up different tabs like APA format, Avoiding Plagiarism, Internet References and so on. On that website, we won’t get lost with a lot of information because its organization is really well done.

I decided to check out other websites that could give me same information as the OWL website could. I came across this website http://writing.colostate.edu/index.cfm. I was really unimpressed with how it presented itself compared to the OWL website. It did not provide concrete information as OWL website provided us. I got very limited information, but one thing I could say that I wish OWL website had was the feedback on your writing. I saw on other websites that you could submit your work in the website and get feedback on it. It is a great way to be very confident with your work when the day you have to turn in your work.

So, overall- I would say I recommend the website to college students. It has all of the information to make your paper a success. A plus for you college students for sure ;)

Pan’s Labyrinth

Hello my lovely readers!

Can you all imagine its October already?!? Time fliesssss especially on this campus. J

Have you all ever watched a movie that made you all think? Have you watched something that makes you question if there is anything out there that we do not know exist? That’s what the movie Pan’s Labyrinth does for me. The moment the movie ended, I sat there for like five minutes watching the end credits just thinking. I can say that there is not a movie that is like Pan’s Labyrinth. I love movies with passion, and there wasn’t a movie that was just like Pan’s Labyrinth. But… here’s the shocking thing-

I did not like the movie. I know, that’s really shocking. I started this movie thinking I would love it especially because almost everyone in the class loves it. Dont hate me because i didnt like it! haha. Maybe I got my hopes too high about this movie, but I think I did not like the movie because of my taste in movies is not anything like Pan’s Labyrinth. It definitely made me think, but I ended up with all of the thoughts about how this movie is not anything near real to me. I’m a big lover of movies that is real, and I think that’s what ruined the movie for me. I can imagine why everyone liked the movie, but there were some parts that I think I would have changed.

I have to admit that the costumes, and the way they filmed the movie is AMAZING. I was in awe that they designed something like that, I mean- I look up to the director for even thinking of those looks. The director is definitely good, and I know I would have loved the movie if I were into that kind of movie. I felt that the movie focused on a lot of different points, which was annoying. The movie focused on things ranging the war and to the fawn. I got confused in the middle of the movie because I did not get how it was important. If the movie did not have any war going on and focus on the girl and the underworld, it would be better. I felt in some ways that the movie was summarized because they did not have enough time. The whole point of the movie was about the girl and her fantasy world, but let’s be honest- the movie focused on that for about an hour out of entire movie. I felt it was rushed in a way. I hoped for more about the immortal world and less of the real world. I would like if it was focused more on the real world, but for this movie- the immortal world seemed like it should be the biggest point in the movie. I do not see any point in that. The scenes in the movie felt not completed. Watching the scenes, I expected more but received less. For example, when the girl met the pale man- I was so immersed in that part and got disappointed when it ended so quickly.

I think the tasks she had to do could have been expressed in a longer way.

But, I can understand why this movie is one of the best movies out there. I do understand that. I wish I were into that kind of that movie more. I praise Del Toro for creating something that is unique, and something that has never been made.
